Jewitt & Wilkie Architects have been retained by Glenisla Development Ltd to design and realise a 60-Bed Care Home that includes 3no 10-Bed Specialist Dementia Wings.

The Care Home will be the main element and focus of a larger development that will mostly care for the ageing and retired community, through the provision of smaller more affordable bungalow type housing in the main. The houses closer to the Care Home will also have the option of a care package provided by and operated from, the Care Home.

Our Design has been guided by the Dementia Services Development Centre (DSDC) at Stirling University and their Dementia Design Audit Tool.

DSDC at Stirling University and their ongoing research makes them one of the leading authorities on Designing for the Dementia Community nationally.

One of the main design features incorporated are secure internal courtyards, with circuitous corridors around them – an opportunity for the residents to exercise independence whilst remaining secure and orientated always.

The most crucial design considerations are in the interior finishes and lighting. They are important in creating the way mapping and safe environment that allows Dementia sufferers to orientate and navigate safely – and indeed to encourage movement and exercise throughout the Home.

At October 2019, the Care Home has commenced on site and the first 20 houses are being built nearby. The Care Home is due for completion at the end of 2020.
